Bristol Rovers have announced their squad numbers for the season ahead, with Luke Thomas taking the number seven off his teammate. Ben Liddle had worn the number seven for the Gas last season after his move from Middlesbrough last summer, but he has forfeited that shirt for the campaign ahead. Thomas, a summer loan acquisition from Barnsley, appears a fitting candidate for the number after a impressing late in pre-season. Brandon Hanlan has kept hold of the number nine, with new striker Brett Pitman to wear 40 this season. Aaron Collins has been given the number 10, with Mark Hughes and Sam Finley taking three and six respectively.
Alfie Kilgour has swapped 15 for number five, with Paul Coutts taking his old number, while James Belshaw has claimed the number one jersey – with first-choice keeper Anssi Jaakkola opting to stick with number 32. New signings Nick Anderton (16), Connor Taylor (17), Harry Anderson (19), Trevor Clarke (20), Harvey Saunders (22) and Sion Spence (24) have all been assigned their first squad numbers since joining the club. The most obvious vacancy in the squad numbers is two, with Luca Hoole – Rovers’ first-choice right-back as it stands – taking the number 30.

That could be a hint towards’ Rovers remaining transfer business in this window, but with Joey Barton’s preference to play a back three it remains possible that shirt will stay vacant. Teenagers Kieran Phillips (29), Ollie Hulbert (34) Jed Ward (35), Sam Heale (36), Kinsly Murray, Joe Budd (38) and Ryan Jones (44) have also been handed first-team squad numbers.
